Mireille Buydens

As one of Belgium’s most renowned and solicited IP lawyers, Mireille co-heads Janson’s IP, IT, artificial intelligence and data protection practice.

 
 

Mireille is active as an IP lawyer for more than 30 years. She is particularly recognized for her expertise in the field of patents, trademarks and copyright. She ranks amongst the best IP litigators in Belgium and has influenced IP legislation in Belgium, notably with a landmark case before the Constitutional Court.  Mireille has also an extensive experience in complex IP transactions and EU consortium agreements. She is also specialized in the legal aspects of artificial intelligence.

Mireille is a professor at the University of Brussels (ULB) and the University of Liège (ULg) and lectures at the Louvain School of Management (UCLouvain). She is the author of numerous books on IP law, including a treatise on patent law (2020). She is president of the Belgian Council for Intellectual Property and a member of the advisory board of the Prof. Mr. E.A. van Nieuwenhoven Helbach Foundation. Mireille is also a WIPO panelist for .com domain names.

    • Successfully assisting Realco S.A., a manufacturer of enzymatic products, in a patent infringement litigation (decision commented in newspapers)

    • Successfully assisting a bone cement manufacturer in a cross-border litigation concerning trade secrets infringement

    • Successfully assisting a first tier French company in the field of energy transmission equipment in a cross-border patent litigation

    • Successfully assisting Maisons du Monde in various copyright infringement cases

    • Successfully assisting Mondelez in a trademark case leading to cancellation of a prominent shape trademark of the adverse party

    • Successfully assisting Merck, the well-known pharmaceutical company, in a landmark case concerning patents against the Belgian State (decision commented in newspapers)
